KUALA LUMPUR: A whopping 835,000kg of surplus food was collected through the Malaysian Food Bank programme since August this year, benefiting 25,000 people.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution said the project was so far carried out in Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Johor Bahru.

“The project is a public initiative to increase awareness among consumers to prepare food only in the required amounts, and to help the relevant parties manage surplus food in a systematic manner,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat today, responding to a question from Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (PH-Ledang).

Saifuddin said among the strategic partners the ministry was working with on the project were Tesco, Aeon, TF Value Mart, Mydin, Lulu Hypermarket, Econsave, 99 Speedmart, Food Aid Foundation, Kechara Food Bank and Mutiara Food Bank.
