What is the requirement to make “Low Sugar” claim in Philippines?

ANSWER

The Bureau of Food and Drugs under the Department of Health, hereby adopts the CODEX Alimentarius Commission Guidelines for Use of the Nutrition and Health Claims CAC/GL 23-1997 of the use of nutrition and health claims in food labelling and in the advertisement of food products.

According to Codex Guidelines for Use of Nutrition and Health Claims, the only claim available for sugar is “free” when the food is meet following condition:

Component Claim Conditions (not more than)
Sugars Free
  • 0.5 grams per 100g for solids·
  • 0.5 grams per 100ml for liquids.
