What are Malaysian labeling requirements of cookies?

ANSWER

According to Garis Panduan Am Pelabelan Makanan (Bahagian IV, Peraturan-Peraturan Makanan 1985), the following items are mandatory on all packaged food:

  1. Language to be used
    • In the case of food produced, prepared or packaged in Malaysia, be in Bahasa Malaysia; or
    • In the case of imported food, be in Bahasa Malaysia or English, and in either case may include translation thereof in any other language.
  2. Product name
  3. Net weight or volume or number of the content of the package
  4. Name and address of manufacturer/ packer or name and address of manufacturer, importer and country of origin

Other labelling information on the packaged food are as following:

  1. Ingredient listing (mandatory if consist 2 or more ingredients)
  2. Hypersensitivity labelling
    Food product or ingredient cause hypersensitivity are as following:
    • Cereal containing gluten, i.e. wheat, rye, barley, oat
    • Tree nut and nut products including peanut and soybean
    • Fish and fish products
    • Milk and milk products (lactose included)
    • Egg and egg products
  3. Additive statement
  4. Date marking
    • For food requiring date marking, refer to Fifth Schedule of Food Regulations 1985
    • EXPIRY DATE or EXP DATE (here insert the date, expressed in day, month and year or in month and year)
    • USE BY (here insert the date, expressed in day, month and year or in month and year)
    • CONSUME BY or CONS BY (here insert the date, expressed in day, month and year or in month and year)
    • BEST BEFORE or BEST BEF (here insert the date, expressed in day, month and year or in month and year)
  5. Illustration and usage of the word ‘SERVING SUGGESTION’
  6. Nutrition information panel
    • Flour confection (any pastry, cake, biscuit/other product prepared from a mixture of flour/meal and other food) require mandatory nutrition labeling.
  7. Statement if Bifidobacteria is added
