Question

What is the latest update in Thailand food regulations for manufacturers, importers and distributors of food products?

ANSWER

THE MOST RECENTLY ENFORCED FOOD REGULATIONS

NOTIFICATION OF THE MINISTRY OF PUBLIC HEALTH (NO. 420) B.E. 2563 (2020)

REGARDING PRODUCTION PROCESSES, PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT, AND FOOD STORAGE

FDA Thailand has an update on food regulations for manufacturers, importers and distributors of food products in Thailand. The ISO 9001 certification will no longer be accepted for product registration for the importation of food products.

Instead, the food manufacturer, importer or distributor requires a quality certificate from the exporting food manufacturer who is certified under the GMP standard or a quality certificate higher than GMP, for e.g., HACCP, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, BRC or IFS for food product registration before importing and obtaining customs clearance.

This regulation came into full effect from 11th April 2021 onwards.

FDA Thailand will only accept the exporting food manufacturer’s quality certificate for food product registration provided it is certified by one of the following authorities:

  1. Relevant governmental authorities from the exporting country
  2. Other institutions recognised by the exporting country’s government
  3. A Certificate provider accredited by the International Accreditation Forum.
The certification provider must be accredited by an Accreditation Body who is member from the approved list from International Accreditation Forum (IAF).
