Question

What is Garcinia Cambogia Extract and its benefits in weight management?

ANSWER

Garcinia cambogia is the main source of hydroxy citric acid (HCA) in most studies. HCA has proven effective in blocking weight increase. It has large quantities of HCA which can affect lipid metabolism including inhibition of fatty acid synthesis, lipogenesis, food intake and introduction of weight loss (Ferrara, 2014).

HCA can suppress appetite which will reduce food intake and promote weight loss. One will feel less hungry and this will cause the body to start burning excess fat stored. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in appetite following supplementation of Hydroxy citric acid (HCA). There is increased production of hepatic glycogen in the presence of HCA, which may activate glucoreceptors, leading to a sensation of fullness and reduced appetite (Preuss et al., 2004).

On the other hand, HCA promotes weight reduction through suppressed fatty acid synthesis. HCA may involve inhibition of ATP citrate lyase, which will eventually limit the availability of acetyl coenzyme A and lipid synthesis during carbohydrate feeding. Besides, study demonstrated that the present dose of HCA can bring fat degradation and beneficially regulate lipid profiles and serum leptin levels (Preuss et al., 2004).
