Question

What are the claims we can make if we were to add collagen into fresh milk Is there a recomended dosage?

ANSWER

Safety of Collagen

In 1999, the US Federal Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for collagen and its hydrolysate forms.

Extensive studies demonstrated no significant side effects: in very rare cases, diarrhea or flatulence were observed. Collagen hydrolysate is neither a mutagen nor a toxic substance nor a teratogen (Gelita Health Initiative, 2006).

Regulation

Currently there is no health or function claims approved by the FDA.

In Singapore, the function claims accepted for collagen is “Collagen is a protein in connective tissues found in skin, bones and muscles.” There is no minimum quantity of collagen required to be added for use of the function claims. The quantity present in the food product should be safe and suitable for general consumption and is sufficient to deliver the intended function claims (Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority Singapore, 2015).

However, companies must be able to substantiate with acceptable documentary proof or scientific evidence when queried.
