Indonesia FDA (National Agency of Drug and Food Control, known as BPOM) has released a new regulation for claims on January 2022 for sweetener and vegan on processed food labels and advertisements.

Below are the updated claims based on the new regulation:

  1. Function Claim for Sweetener

a. Isomaltulose: Isomaltulose is a sugar substitute sweetener that doesn’t cause an increase in blood glucose rapidly after consuming this product. With specific requirements, processed food must possess the right criteria to meet the requirements of low sugar claims.

b. Sucromalt: Sucromalt is a sugar substitute sweetener that doesn’t cause an increase in blood glucose rapidly after consuming this product. The specific requirements in processed food should meet the requirements of low sugar claims and the composition of sucromalt is fructose (35-45% dry weight), leucrose (7-15% dry weight), mono- and disaccharide (maximum 3% dry weight), and oligosaccharides (40-60% dry weight).

c. Xylitol: To help maintain natural white teeth. The requirements in processed food must contain xylitol with at least 15%, calcium carbonate with at least 0.5%, and the claim should be accompanied with a recommended inclusion for consumers to brush their teeth regularly.

  1. Vegan Claim Explanation
  • Vegan is a person who can’t eat animal-based products and includes animal derivatives (meat, fish, honey, milk, or egg).
  • Vegan Claims can be made if processed food does not contain animal-based food ingredients and processed products, including honey
  • Proof that processed food does not contain food ingredients which is animal-based and their processed product as stated must be proven by deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analysis
  • Inclusion of a vegan claim may be accompanied by a vegan logo
