Is sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate permissible to be added into ice-cream in China? If so, what are the max levels that can be added according to regulation?

ANSWER

According to National Food Safety Standard – Standard for Uses of Food Additives (GB2760-2014), sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate are not permitted to be used in ice cream applications.

Remark: Sodium benzoate is permitted to be used as a preservative in flavored ice or ice bar products with a maximum level of 1.0g/kg (measured as per benzoic acid).
