Beta Glucan in Oat Drinks: Understanding Health Claim Requirements in Asia
Aug 19, 2026

In the modern food industry, advances in food technology and greater access to convenient and highly processed foods have contributed to changes in dietary patterns. Consumers now have access to a wide range of foods and beverages, including products that may be high in added sugars, refined carbohydrates and calories. These changes have increased interest in healthier food choices that support overall health and wellbeing.

One area receiving growing attention is blood sugar management. Excessive consumption of sugar, particularly through frequent intake of high-sugar foods and beverages, may contribute to fluctuations in blood glucose levels and, when consumed excessively over a prolonged period, may increase the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.¹ Maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity and making healthier food choices are therefore important for supporting overall health.²

Among the plant-based beverages available today, oat drinks have gained increasing attention due to their nutritional value, convenience and suitability as an alternative to dairy-based beverages.³ Beta glucan, a soluble dietary fibre found in oats, is one of the key components associated with the nutritional and functional properties of oat-based products.

Why Beta Glucan Matters in Oat Drinks

Scientific studies have investigated the health benefits of oats, including their potential role in lowering glycemic response, reducing blood cholesterol levels, supporting healthy gut microbiota and regulating blood pressure.⁴

Beta glucan absorbs water in the digestive system and forms a gel-like substance. This can slow the movement of food through the stomach, allowing carbohydrates to be broken down and absorbed more slowly. As a result, it may help prevent a rapid increase in blood sugar levels after eating.⁵

It may also increase feelings of fullness and support appetite regulation, which may contribute to better dietary intake and the maintenance of healthy body weight.

The physiological effects of beta glucan have contributed to increasing interest in its potential health benefits, particularly in relation to blood glucose regulation and cholesterol management. However, permitted health claims and the conditions for using them vary between countries, depending on factors such as the source of beta glucan, the amount present in the product and the requirements established by the relevant regulatory authorities.

For food manufacturers, this means that the same beta glucan-containing product may have different claim considerations depending on the target market.
