Question

How about the food regulation about Prebiotic in Philippine? Which fiber can be claimed “Prebiotic” on the label for beverage in Philippine? Please advise.

ANSWER

According to Guidelines In The Use of Nutrition and Health Claims in Food (Bureau Circular 2007-002), there are no specific regulations for Prebiotics in the Philippines.  However, the FDA of Philippines adopts the Codex Alimentarius Commission Guidelines for Use of Nutrition and Health Claims (CAC/GL 23-1997) in the evaluation of the use of nutrition and health claims. Health claims means any representation that states, suggests, or implies that a relationship exists between a food or a constituent of that food and health. Health claims include the following:

a) Nutrient functional claims

b) Other functional claims

c) Reduction of disease risk claims
