In August 2022, The National Health Commissions of the People’s Republic of China (NHC) announced an update on “Permitted Strains to be Used in Food” and “Permitted Strains to be Used in Infant Food”.
The objectives for this update of the list of permitted strains are as follows:
- Provide full list of permitted strains approved by the NHC for food and infant formula
- Amend the names of the strains to standardise it, in line with international regulations and latest research
- Specify the permitted subspecies in the list of “Permitted Strain to be Used in Food”
A two-year grace period is given for the mentioned strain names to be changed in order to avoid normal production and operation disruptions.

Notes:
- Bacterial cultures that are traditionally used in food production can continue to be used. Those that are not traditionally used or excluded from the above list will be regarded as new food raw materials, which should be managed according to the “Measures on the Administration of New Food Raw Materials”.
- Bacterial cultures that can be used in baby food are detailed in another list.
- For bacterial cultures approved by the relevant authority through notices after 2010, their application scope shall follow the requirements specified in the original notices.
