What are the general requirements on food labelling in Malaysia?

ANSWER

According to Garis Panduan Am Pelabelan Makanan (Bahagian IV, Peraturan-Peraturan Makanan 1985), the general requirements of food labelling in Malaysia are as follows:

1. Language
a. Labels for food produced, prepared or packaged in Malaysia, may be in Bahasa Malaysia and may include translations in any other languages.
b. Labels for imported food, may be in Bahasa Malaysia or English.

2. Product name

3. Additional statements for example “CONTAINS” (states whether beef or pork, or its derivatives, or lard, as the case may be)” and “CONTAINS ALCOHOL”.

4. Declaration of the proportion of ingredients

5. Hypersensitivity labelling

6. Statement for food additives in the form “contains permitted (state the type of the relevant food additive”.

7. Minimum net weight or volume or number of drained weight of the food

8. Name and address of manufacturer/ Importer / Country of origin.

9. Date marking

10. Image

11. Statement of serving suggestion

12. Nutritional labelling

13. Use of logo
