The Mumbai Central railway station has been certified as India’s first Eat Right Station, with four stars rating by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This comes in the wake of the Eat Right India initiative by the FSSAI in 2018, and launched by the Indian Railways, as part of efforts to help passengers make a healthy and right food choice.
As per the press note, the Mumbai Central Railway Station has now become the country’s first Eat Right Station. The press notes also stated that the Mumbai Central station has been judged on the basis of compliance of food safety and hygiene, availability of healthy diet, food handling at preparation, transhipment and retail/serving point, food waste management, promotion of local and seasonal food and creating awareness on food safety and healthy diet.
FSSAI, along with Western Railways (WR) and Indian Railways Catering Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), has trained food handlers, both in base kitchens and canteens. And as per the procedure, they inspected catering establishments at the station and rated and certified the standard of food.
What is Eat Right India Movement?
The two foundations of the Eat Right India movement
are Eat Healthy and Eat Safe. This movement aims
to engage, and enable citizens to improve their health and well-being. Run by
FSSAI, it is a collective effort to ensure that both demand and supply-side
interventions are via the key stakeholders. While, on the demand side, the
focus is on the behavioural and social change of the consumers, thereby leading
them to make the right food choice.
Further, on the supply side, the emphasis is mainly on encouraging those who are in the food business to reformulate their products and provide more nutritional awareness to the consumers, which includes matters like proper water disposal, hygiene maintenance, and following safe food practices.
