REGULATORY UPDATE: INDONESIA REVISES FOOD CATEGORY REGULATIONS

The Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) has issued an updated regulation regarding Food Categories. This regulation numbered 13, year 2023 replaces the previous food category regulation number 34, year 2019. Food category is a food grouping based on raw material, processing, and/or target of use. This grouping is important for producers and importers in Indonesia to decide microbes and heavy metal maximum limit, main characteristic of products, product registration, food additives that can be used & approved on product, etc. The updated regulation is completed with a tidier approved ingredients list (derived from plants and animals). Food categories that were previously approved by special permission (assessment) application and not included in previous regulations has also been included in the updated regulation. Some example foods as per below:

  1. Rasgulla (cheese ball in sugar syrup) on 01.7 Dairy-based desserts
  2. Gulab jamun (fries cheese ball in sugar syrup) on 01.7 Dairy-based desserts
  3. Red edible oil on 02.1.2 Vegetable oil and fat
  4. Krill oil on 02.1.2 Vegetable oil and fat
  5. Kombucha Powder on 14.1.5 Coffee, coffee substitutes, tea, herbal infusions, and other hot cereal and grain
