Reducing Food Waste is a Collective Responsibility

DPO International was again the main sponsor for the EU-ASEAN Forum on Food Safety 2016 held at the Nexus Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was officiated by YB Dato’ Seri Dr. Hilmi bin Haji Yahaya, Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia. The 2 day forum was about nurturing the EU-ASEAN policy dialogue on a harmonised food safety and food regulatory environment.

The EU-ASEAN Forum on Food Safety 2016 is built on the momentum of its inaugural forum in 2014, and has since become a flagship platform for the EU and ASEAN communities in the public and private sector to discuss regulatory challenges and opportunities for the unification of standards for food safety throughout the region.

The first day of the forum was divided into three sessions that were focused on vital topics concerning food safety which were:

  • Status Quo: Food Safety & Food Standard Harmonization Initiatives
  • Principles of the ASEAN Food Safety Policy
  • Effective Communication of Food Safety Measures

While the second day saw highly stimulating presentations & discussions from prominent thought leaders in the industry, covering topics such as:

  • SCIENCE & INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE: ASEAN Food Safety Policy
  • RELIGIOUS PERSPECTIVE: Food Safety in Halal Assurance & Halal e-Commerce

This year’s forum saw more thought-provoking dialogue between attendees and the panellists/speakers as participants were inspired to access the current situation and possible strategies to implement a unified food safety standard within ASEAN countries.

The forum was moderated by Professor Jørgen Schlundt from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore who was previously the Director for the Food Safety and Zoonoses Department in WHO.

Mr. Daniel Pans, Head of the Organizing Committee & Group CEO of DPO International gave the opening address for Day 2 of the event, speaking on the topic of ‘How Can a Food Regulatory Framework Contribute to the Reduction of Food Waste’.

Over 140 participants attended the event, comprising food academics, policy makers, government representatives from ministries as well as food corporations, companies and SMEs.
